These Terms and Conditions (the "Agreement") govern your use of CITRIS Quest (the "App"). By installing, accessing, or using the App, you agree to be bound by this Agreement and our Privacy Policy.

If you do not agree to these terms, do not install or use the App.

1. About CITRIS Quest

CITRIS Quest is an interactive location-based game developed to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the CITRIS & Banatao Institute at the University of California.

Purpose: Educational, research, and community engagement

The App is provided free of charge and is not intended for commercial use.

2. Eligibility and Account Creation

The App is available to anyone with a valid email address. No minimum age requirement applies, though the App is rated 4+ by Apple.

By creating an account, you agree to:

• Provide accurate and current information (username, email, password)
• Maintain the confidentiality of your account credentials
• Be responsible for all activity conducted under your account
• Verify your email address before accessing full App features

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

3. How the App Works

CITRIS Quest is a scavenger hunt game where you:

• Scan physical pixel art installations located on UC campuses
• Earn in-game currency (XP and bits) for successful scans
• Unlock achievements and customize your profile
• Compete on leaderboards with other players
• Connect with friends and view community activity

All in-game currency, items, and rewards have no real-world monetary value. There are no purchases, transactions, or exchanges of real money within the App.

4. Campus Access and Physical Safety

Campus Location Requirement:

The game requires you to be physically present on University of California campuses (Berkeley, Davis, Merced, or Santa Cruz) to scan artwork installations.

You agree to:

• Respect all campus rules, policies, and regulations while playing
• Only access areas that are open to the public
• Not trespass on restricted, private, or hazardous areas
• Be aware of your surroundings while using the App
• Not play while driving, biking, or operating any vehicle
• Exercise caution and common sense at all times

Safety Disclaimer:

CITRIS Quest is designed for safe, lawful exploration. However, you are solely responsible for your personal safety while using the App. Pay attention to traffic, obstacles, weather conditions, and your environment. Do not enter dangerous or restricted areas.

5. Privacy and Data Collection

We collect the following data to operate the App:

Account Data: Username, email address, password (encrypted)

Gameplay Data: Scans, XP, bits, achievements, equipped items

Location Data: GPS coordinates when you scan artwork (to verify proximity)

Photo Data: Images you capture during scans

Social Data: Friend connections, privacy settings, user reports

Technical Data: Device information, app version, error logs (via feedback form only)

We do not use third-party analytics or tracking services. All data is stored securely and used solely to provide App functionality.

6. Content Ownership and Licensing

App Content:

All designs, artwork, graphics, code, text, logos, and other materials in the App are owned by CITRIS & the Banatao Institute or licensed from contributors. You may not copy, reproduce, distribute, modify, or create derivative works without written permission.

User-Generated Content (Your Scans):

When you upload photos through the App, you grant CITRIS & the Banatao Institute a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to:

• Store and display your photos within the App
• Feature your scans in community feeds and leaderboards
• Use photos for promotional or educational purposes related to the project

You retain the right to delete your photos at any time. Deleted photos will be removed from the App but may remain in backups for a limited period.

You represent that you own or have permission to upload any photos you submit and that they do not infringe on anyone else's rights.

7. Acceptable Use

You agree NOT to:

• Hack, reverse-engineer, or attempt to exploit the App or its systems
• Use cheats, bots, or automated tools to gain unfair advantages
• Upload offensive, illegal, harassing, or infringing content
• Impersonate others or create fake accounts
• Spam, harass, or interfere with other users' experience
• Share your account credentials with others
• Use the App for any illegal or unauthorized purpose

Consequences:

Violation of these rules may result in account suspension, termination, or reporting to university authorities or law enforcement.

8. User Reports and Moderation

You may report other users for inappropriate behavior through the in-app reporting system. We review reports and may take action including warnings, content removal, or account suspension.

False or malicious reports may result in penalties to your account.

9. Third-Party Services

The App uses third-party services for functionality, including:

• Supabase (database and authentication)
• Hugging Face (image classification)
• MapBox (mapping)

These services have their own terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for their practices, availability, or performance.

10. Modifications and Termination

We may:

• Modify, suspend, or discontinue the App or any features at any time
• Update these Terms with notice (continued use constitutes acceptance)
• Terminate your access for violations or at our discretion

Upon termination:

• You must stop using the App immediately
• Your account and data may be deleted
• At project conclusion, all data will be archived for potential future use or revival
